Iron in portable water causes a bitter taste, oxidized precipitates, and a yellowish-brown to reddish-brown coloration, making the water unsuitable. It also stains surfaces. Iron exists as ferrous (Fe++) or ferric (Fe+++), with ferric iron typically precipitating out. Iron forms complexes with hydroxides and inorganic compounds, and organic substances can increase its solubility. Consequently, water with high alkalinity usually contains less iron than water with low alkalinity.
